Round one goes to Rancho Buena Vista. Two more rounds of the heavyweight battle have yet to be played.

Almost like boxers in a ring, the RBV Longhorns (11-4) delivered a solid blow in the form of a 12-4 home victory Tuesday over the Broncos of Rancho Bernardo (12-4). With two games remaining in this week’s series between the Longhorns and Broncos, the squads have plenty of fight left.

In Tuesday’s meeting, RBV jumped out to an early lead with seven runs in the first inning. Senior Tony Wolters got the scoring started with a three-run blast over the rightfield fence, collecting his third homerun of the season. The rally was capped off by a two-run double off the bat of senior Kody Marshall.

Leading the Longhorns on the mound Tuesday was junior Dylan DeMeyer, who earned the win by going six strong innings. He scattered eight hits, allowing four runs and striking out four Broncos’ hitters.

DeMeyer did a good job of preventing Rancho Bernardo juniors Brandon Berry and Andrew Daniel from doing any serious damage out of the No. 1 and No. 2 spots in the lineup. Berry and Daniel are hitting .468 and .527 respectively to lead the Broncos’ attack.

Rancho Bernardo starter Trevor Williams proved to be uncharacteristically hittable. Williams entered Tuesday’s game having allowed just three earned runs across his previous 16.1 innings but gave up eight scores to the Longhorns’ lineup.

The two teams will go toe-to-toe again on Thursday, with the Broncos hosting the Longhorns at 3:30 p.m.

In the latest regional poll released by the North County Times, RBV ranks No. 2 and Rancho Bernardo is positioned at No. 4. Holding the No. 1 spot is La Costa Canyon.
