Sundevils Slip Past Jaguars, 3-0, as Williams Throws One-Hit Shutout

Mt. Carmel created havoc on the basepaths and received timely hitting en route to a 3-0 victory Wednesday over Valley Center in high school softball action.

The Sundevils of Mt. Carmel improve to 16-3 overall this season, having won their last six games. They will travel to Oceanside on Friday to challenge the Pirates at 3:30 p.m.

Head coach Bill Dunckel’s Valley Center squad falls to 9-9 so far in 2010. The Jaguars host Orange Glen on Friday afternoon.

On Wednesday the Sundevils’ Ashley Romano and Alix Johnson came up with key stolen bases while Kellie Fox and Nina Villanueva collected singles to bring in one run each. A sacrifice fly from Nikki Barba extended Mt. Carmel’s lead to 3-0.

Junior Bree Williams hurled a complete-game shutout for the Sundevils while allowing just one hit. The magical season continues for the 5-foot-6 right-hander, who has totaled 123.2 innings with an earned run average of 0.79. Williams currently holds a scoreless streak of 21 innings.

Johnson continues to lead the balanced Mt. Carmel attack with a .431 average (28-for-65). The senior centerfielder has scored 21 runs while collecting seven doubles.
